DARTMOUTH TOWN

Dartmouth is steeped in history. The Pilgrim Fathers set sail for America from the lovely Bayards Cove. Eisenhower, Montgomery and Churchill stood on the Higher Ferry slipway outside QuerQuay and ordered the ill-fated Exercise Tiger, the D-day rehearsal on Slapton Sands.

Walk through its narrow streets and you’ll be delighted by the wealth of historic buildings as well as the modern delights served up by a unique community of small independent shops and over 70 pubs, cafes and restaurants.

Life centres around the unique Boat Float inner harbour, which borders the beautiful Royal Avenue Gardens, with its bandstand. Through the gardens you’ll find the Newcomen Engine House, with the earliest surviving engine built by Thomas Newcomen, an ironmonger born and raised in Dartmouth, who kick-started the Industrial Revolution and changed the world. Next door is the Tourist Information Centre, where you can find out what’s going on and buy tickets to almost everything.

Visit the Flavel Centre for its Theatre, Cinema, Art Gallery, Library and Art Café. Pop in to the Dartmouth Museum, which is upstairs in the ancient Butterwalk.
